Role summary
The systems programmer is the custodian of IBM z/OS infrastructure, overseeing installation, customisation, and performance optimisation of the operating system and its subsystems (CICS, DB2, MQ, RACF). The role safeguards platform resilience, capacity, and regulatory compliance across multiple LPARs and data-centre sites.
Key responsibilities
Install, SMP/E-maintain, and upgrade z/OS, CICS TS, DB2, MQ, z/OS Connect EE, and associated ISV products.
Configure and tune Workload Manager (WLM) policies, Coupling Facility structures, and Sysplex settings for optimal throughput and MSU efficiency.
Manage RACF security classes, digital certificates, TLS enablement, and MFA integration to satisfy PCI-DSS and GDPR mandates.
Monitor system health via RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON, and in-house APM dashboards; generate capacity-planning forecasts and growth projections.
Engineer high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures (GDPS, PPRC mirroring, HyperSwap) and coordinate annual DR exercises.
Provide middleware stewardship—defining CICS regions, DB2 data-sharing groups, MQ channels/queues, and zCEE instances—to meet application SLAs.
Automate operational tasks using REXX, Ansible, or Zowe CLI and contribute to self-service tooling.
Mentor junior sysprogs and liaise with IBM, ISV vendors, and Carnival’s enterprise infrastructure team for problem resolution and roadmap alignment.
Essential qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
7 + years administering IBM z/OS in a large-scale, production Sysplex.
Deep expertise in at least two subsystems (CICS, DB2, MQ) and solid grounding in JES2/JES3, HCD/HCM, DFSMS, and RACF.
Proficiency in SMP/E maintenance, IPL procedures, dump analysis, and disaster-recovery tooling (GDPS, SRDF, Copy Services).
Proven capacity-planning and performance-tuning acumen (MIPS/MSU management, cost-containment strategies).
Strong documentation discipline and experience running change boards and release-management cycles.
Desirable attributes
Exposure to hybrid-cloud connectivity (z/OS Cloud Broker, zCX, or cloud object-store integration).
Scripting skills in REXX, Python, or Shell for automation and monitoring dashboards.
Certifications: IBM Certified System Programmer – z/OS or IBM Certified Specialist – CICS System Programming.
Why join
Work on one of the world’s highest-volume cruise-booking engines with stringent availability targets.
Access continuous learning—COBOL v6 new-features workshops, z/OS V2R5 deep dives, and cloud-integration labs.
Collaborate with U.S. and EMEA experts in a multicultural, dev-sec-ops environment.
Competitive remuneration, HMO coverage, and performance-based bonuses.
